Middlesex Hospital Annexe Site

Proposals for the redevelopment of the Middlesex Hospital Annexe Site have  been submitted to the the London Borough of Camden for Planning Permission. The Llewelyn Davies proposal is for a predominantly residential led mixed use scheme that will secure the long term future of the listed Strand Union Workhouse, currently on the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register.

Appointed by University College London Hospital Charity (UCLHC), the scheme aims to deliver a number of ‘legacy’ affordable residential units, relating to previous UCLH projects, within a mixed-use scheme comprising private residential and commercial office space.

The scheme will reinstate the “Bedford Passage” as permeable public open space and pedestrian route, creating additional public and private amenity space within the site. Extensive consultations have taken place with Camden Planners and other local stakeholders seeking to deliver the objectives for the site defined by the Fitzrovia Area Action Plan.

Currently, 58 high quality homes will be provided, which approximately 70% will be affordable. It comprises 12 private homes and 46 affordable homes of social rented and intermediate tenure, reflecting Camden Council’s 2016 Intermediate Housing Strategy.  New buildings have been planned and articulated to better reveal the historic character and significance of the listed buildings.

The boundary treatment of the site around the listed building will enhance the character of the Charlotte Street Conservation Area within which the site is located. Buildings will vary in height from 3 storeys to 9 storeys in the north east corner.
